The Sri Lanka High Commission in London commemorated the 68th Independence Day of Sri Lanka on 4th February with the hoisting of the national flag and recital of the national anthem followed by a two-minute silence to remember all those who sacrificed their lives in the defence of the country.  Religious observances were conducted by the Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Nayaka Thero, Sivasri Supramaniyak Kurukkal, Rev. Fr. Daya Perera, and Moulavi Mohamed Anas, respectively. The event was attended by a wide cross-section of members of the Sri Lankan community in the UK.

A Buddha Pooja and Seth Pirith chanting, organised by the Sri Lanka High Commission, was held at the London Buddhist Vihara on 8th January 2016 to commemorate the first anniversary of the inauguration in office of President Maithripala Sirisena. Chief Sangha Nayaka of Great Britain and the Chief incumbent of the London Buddhist Vihara, Most Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Nayaka Thero and resident monks of the Vihara invoked blessings on President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Government and the people of Sri Lanka.

President Maithripala Sirisena concludes official visit to the United Kingdom

President Maithripala Sirisena concluded a historic official visit to the United Kingdom on 11th March, his second visit overseas since assuming office as President.  As Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth, President Sirisena attended the Commonwealth Day Observance at Westminister Abbey and the Commonwealth Day Reception hosted by Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma at Marlborough House and met Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Head of the Commonwealth and senior members of the Royal family.
